About 18 months ago I started going to a counselor for anxiety that I have battled for a long time. Best. Decision. Ever. But that is not what this post about. This post is about something that she challenged me to do a few months ago. She had me list all of my roles. Anything from Mommy, to nursery coordinator, to seamstress. She then told me to prioritize them and that I might even need to get rid of some of them entirely. WHAT!?!?! Hold the phone!!! You want me to say "no" to doing something that I am completely capable of doing? Yep, that's EXACTLY what she was saying.
You see it starts early on in life. Do all the things for all the people. Colleges want to see that you're well rounded. That's why you join every single club and activity humanly possible. That's why you wake up at 5 am and crawl into bed at midnight. That's why you're spread so thin that you can't really excel at anything and instead you just shoot for "good enough." Good enough. Wow. Is that really what we were created for? To be good enough? Oh, my friend I don't think so. I believe we were created for so much more! We were created to take Jesus' name to the ends of the earth. We were created to make disciples. We were created to enjoy the beauty all around us! We were created to love people like God loves us! How can we do this if we are just striving for a life that's good enough? The answer is that we can't!
What roles do you need to say goodbye to? We have to change our thought process and realize that just because we are capable of doing something doesn't mean that we should do it! It might mean some awkward conversations. It will probably be uncomfortable at first. It most certainly won't be easy, but to be able to live fully and to love your people deeply? Oh so, so worth it!
